Background
MindFlow Technologies is a pioneer in the Strategic Sourcing Solutions market and a leader in delivering
large-scale, recurring direct materials cost reductions. Its flagship product, MindFlow Sourcing Suite™,
is a powerful set of web-based applications that optimize and integrate the end-to-end Strategic Sourcing process.
The Challenge
MindFlow had already established itself as a pioneer in the strategic sourcing market. Product Managers
at MindFlow had plenty of ideas about newer modules that could be added to its Sourcing Suite so that it
could solve more sourcing complexities.
However, market conditions post the internet bubble limited MindFlow's ability to invest in adding more
people to its R&D team in the US.
The Solution
MindFlow leveraged Talentica's BuildODC service to quickly set up a team in India. The initial team consisted
of experienced developers (all IIT/REC graduates), a data warehousing expert and a quality assurance engineer.
All team members were hired specifically for Mindflow as per its requirements.
The offshore team adopted MindFlow's processes for documentation, coding conventions, etc. It used a common
source code control software and bug tracking system with MindFlow's core development team. Access to these
systems was maintained through a secure VPN connection.
Communications were mainly through scheduled weekly status calls as well as daily informal discussions between
the two teams on design and implementation issues. Although bulk of the communication was through e-mail, members
of both the teams also used voice communications, internet messenger services and Webex as needed.
Talentica’s contract with MindFlow provides an option for MindFlow to transfer the team to its own subsidiary if it
decides to do go on its own in the future.
A dedicated team without risk or capital investment
Mindflow could expand headcount of its R&D team without substantial increase in its R&D budget.
All team members were hired as per its specific requirement. More importantly, Mindflow could leverage
Talentica’s experience in setting up processes for successful dual shore product development.
Higher productivity and quality
The entire team was selected as per Mindflow’s requirements of experience and qualifications. Hiring of developers
was restricted to graduates of the top colleges in India (IIT’s and REC’s). Thus, Mindflow could achieve much higher
productivity and superior quality of work.
Full Management Control
With a dedicated team, managers at Mindflow had the freedom to manage and reallocate developers between tasks as per their needs.
An option to transfer the team
In case Mindflow decides to expand rapidly, or it needs to own the offshore team for a better valuation during an
acquisition or IPO, it has the option to transfer the team members to its own subsidiary at a pre-determined cost.
